Book Review: Australia's Favourite Recipes

Australia's Favourite Recipes is a collection of more than 70 treasured recipes collected from families around Australia. It features the stories and memories of everyday Australians and their favourite food. The recipes are varied and include many of our favourites - Berry Meringue Cake, Tiramasu, Victoria Sponge, Weet Bix Slice, Lamingtons, Rocky Road - and that is just from the Baking and Dessert section which we investigated first!

Other sections of the book include: Starters and Snacks; Soups; Vegetables; Meat and Poultry; and Seafood. Some of our favourite savory recipes include: Goat's Cheese Tartlets; Thai Fish Cakes; Fast Basil Beef; and Quiche Lorraine.

What we love about this book is that the recipes are all family style favourites. My family prefers good hearty meals without too many fancy ingredients, and that is what this book delivers. It is the sort of recipes that you could make for a family dinner or for a special occasion. All the recipes include a description of the dish and a food memory from the contributor. The recipes are all beautifully photographed and styled, with a full page photo devoted to each recipe. We always look for great photography when choosing cookbooks.

Australia's Favourite Recipes has been collated and edited by television host, Leila McKinnon; and part proceeds from the sales will be donated to Legacy. It is a beautiful book and would make a lovely gift for a home cook.
