This 'n' That

Sarah made up a batch of Chocolate Caramel Cookie Bars (Recipe from Martha Stewart) on the weekend and they were delicious!! The salted chocolate caramel layer was amazing. I think we will be making more of these over the festive season.

Sarah and I are attending a Gingerbread House Workshop at a local cake decorating store on the weekend. We have been busy buying lots of lollies - can't wait to learn all the techniques. This may become a Christmas tradition!

The latest Handmade Magazine is dedicated to Quick Christmas Crafts and includes my Starry Night Napkins. These were fun to put together and I love the aqua and silver colours ( I might have to have a change from the red and white next year!)

Christmas Favours

We are starting our Christmas celebrating early here this year as part of our extended family will be overseas for Christmas. I love to add some chocolates to gifts, especially when giving gift cards or money, as it makes it more festive. I seem to be stuck on red and white theme for Christmas again this year:)

I made the Christmas handbag using the Forever Young cartridge on the Cricut, and added some red and white polka dotted paper and some bling. It was the perfect size to hold a cellophane bag of chocolates.

I had some white pillow boxes in my stash that I bought at Spotlight some time ago. I cut out a gingerbread man tag using the Very Merry Tags cartridge and used clear glitter on the background.

It is so much fun to make a start on some Christmas projects.

Quick Crochet Gift Tags

I crocheted up a batch of small granny squares using  DMC Perle 5 in red and white, et voilà the Quick Crocheted Gift Tag was born.

These would also work well in other colours - I can just visualise them in some pastel hues for Easter.

What I am Working on Today..

I usually work on a Monday but had to change my work days this week so I can attend a conference later in the week. It has been wonderful having today off - I met my Mum for coffee; did some more Christmas shopping; and even managed to get some sewing done! I am sure I won't feel so happy on Friday though when I have to work instead of being at home.

I had some request for progress shots of Sarah's Bliss Quilt.

I completed most of the blocks last week during the retreat, and managed to finish sewing them together today. Just have to wait for the border fabric to arrive, and hopefully will have it finished for Christmas! This may well be the quickest quilt I have ever made!

The gorgeous Bliss Fabric came from Ladybug Quilts.

Quick Gift Idea: Ribbon Key Fobs

Sarah was looking for a quick sewing project to do and made up this trio of key fobs in less than an hour. These will be perfect to pop into gifts for Christmas - pretty and practical, my favourite type of project. I think I will be putting an order in for her to make up a few more!

The ribbons were from Ribbons Galore, and the key fob hardware and heavyweight webbing was from Everything Ribbons.

This Week.....

This week has been super busy although not a lot of crafting has been done, apart from a project that I can't show you just yet.

  • I had a fantastic time on the sewing retreat last weekend and managed to get all the blocks done for Sarah's quilt. Hope to get it sewn together and quilted in time for Christmas. Janelle has summed up the retreat perfectly.
  • The first child has been in the middle of his Year 11 exams (can't believe he has only one year of school left).
  • Sarah had her braces removed and now has the most beautiful smile.

  • I picked up the Wee Wonderfuls book from the library. Plenty of inspiring dolls and softies to make. They all have the sweetest embroidered faces. This one will be going on the Christmas list!

  • I have finally started my Christmas shopping and for a change am doing most of it online. I have been buying up at the Book Depository (gotta love the free worldwide shipping and the cheap prices) - especially as the extended family is getting more spread out these days.
  • Sarah and I have been oohing and aahhing over our new ribbons that have arrived this week from Ribbons Galore. Stay tuned for some ribbon inspired projects over the next few weeks. Fiona has the most amazing array of ribbons in her store - they are imported from Europe, North America, and Asia. We are thrilled to welcome Ribbons Galore as our newest sponsor.

My Bags are Packed, I'm Ready to Go.....

..... well not quite (and now I can't get that John Denver song out of my head!). I am heading off this afternoon for my first ever sewing retreat with Janelle and some other crafty ladies. The hard part is deciding how many projects to take (with no meals to cook, no cleaning to be done, and no taxi duties - I am hoping for a productive as well as fun weekend).

I have cut up my Bliss fabric ready for a quilt for Sarah. She has requested a quilt that is similar to this design - I can't wait to get started on this one.

Some gorgeous Pippijoe fabric arrived this week from Kelani Fabric Obsession just in time for weekend sewing.

The Christmas Issue of Marie Claire Idees arrived last week and didn't disappoint! My favourite article has some lovely ideas on how to repurpose sheet music to make Christmas decorations.

Sarah has been spoiling us again this week with her baking. This week we were treated to her Caramel Coconut Cake - the recipe is from this old favourite cookbook.

Thanks to Craft Gossip for featuring my "be merry" Festive Garland.

Hope to have some progress on my sewing projects to show you next week! Have a great weekend.

Tutorial: "Be Merry" Festive Garland

Here is a project that I designed for QFD Creative Christmas in July Online Stitching Event. I wanted to share it here as a free tutorial.

This sweet bunting with its scallops, yo yo's and ricrac edging has a vintage feel. It will set the scene in your living room this Christmas and it is sized for stringing across your mantelpiece or staircase to bring some festive cheer.

Materials:
0.15 m white wool felt
0.2 m green wool felt
0.2 m red wool felt
0.2 m red printed quilting cotton
0.2 m green printed quilting cotton
0.15 m green polka dot quilting cotton
4m white cotton ricrac trim
Scrap of white fabric for yo yo's
9 assorted red and green buttons
1 x A4 sheet of appliqué film/fusible webbing (such as vliesofix or steam a seam 2)
0.3 m medium weight fusible interfacing
DMC Perle 5 in colours red (no: 321) and green (no: 703)
Spray starch
Card
Templates – Template 1 and Template 2

Supplies:
Computer and printer
Iron
Scissors
Sewing machine
Co-ordinating thread
Clover Yo Yo maker – large (optional)
Hand sewing needles
Marking pen

Please read all instructions before commencing the project. Careful and accurate cutting and sewing is essential to ensure success with this project. It is recommended that fabric be 100% cotton, pre-washed and well ironed. Requirements are based on fabric 112 cm wide (44 in). A seam allowance of ¼ inch has been used in this project.

Instructions:

1. Print out the letters to spell "be merry" using template provided (Font used: Mellow; Size : 370).
Trace the letters in reverse onto the back of the appliqué film (paper side). Cut around the letters leaving ½ cm allowance. Press the letters onto white felt. Cut out the letters, and peel off the paper backing.

2. Trace the scallop templates onto card and cut out. Trace the flower template onto card and cut out.

3. Cut out the fabrics:
Using the felt template, cut out 5 large scallops out of red felt; and 5 out of green felt.
Using the Cotton template, cut out 5 medium scallops out of red printed cotton; and 5 out of green printed cotton.
Using the pressing template, cut out 10 scallops out of interfacing.
Cut the polka dot binding fabric into 3 strips, each measuring 5 cm.
Using the flower template, cut out 9 flowers from red and green felt.

4. Press the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric scallops.

5. Using spray starch, moisten the edges of a fabric scallop. Place the scallop face down on the ironing board, put the pressing template on top, and press the edges over the template. Remove the template. The fabric scallop should have ¼ inch seam allowance pressed to the back.  Repeat for all 10 scallops.

6. Alternating red and green scallops, press the letters to the middle of the scallops. Stitch around the letters using perle thread and a running stitch. With the letters fused to red fabric, stitch in green perle cotton. With the letters on the green fabric, stitch in red perle cotton.

Photo: Closeup of Letter

7. Layer the red scallops onto green felt, and the green scallops onto red felt. Pin the ricrac under the edge of the cotton fabric so half the ricrac is visible. Stitch the fabric scallops to the felt using a scant seam allowance, catching the ricrac in position as you stitch.
Repeat for all the scallops.

Photo: Stitching ricrac

8. Position the scallops so that the colours alternate and spell out "be merry" There should be an extra scallop at each end, and one between the words.

9. Stitch the three binding strips together using a mitred join. Press the strip in half lengthwise. Open it out and then fold each long edge in towards the crease and press. Fold in half again to create a strip that measures 1.25 cm x 318 cm (approx).

10. Pin the binding over the top of the scallops. The scallops should be positioned 2.5 cm apart, with equal lengths of binding at each end. Stitch the flags to the binding, and press.

11. Make 9 yo yo's using the yo yo maker and white fabric following the directions on the yoyo maker. If you do not have a yoyo maker, make a cardboard circle template that is 10 cm in diameter. Use this template to trace circles on the wrong side of your fabric. Following your traced line, cut out a circle of fabric. Fold under a scant 3 mm along the edge of your circle and stitch close to the edge. Use a strong thread and make sure that it is long enough to go right around the circumference of your circle. Pull on the thread to gather the edges to the centre. Flatten the yoyo and even out the gathers. Sew a few stitches to secure.

12. Layer a yoyo onto a felt flower and stitch them together, positioning a button in the centre (Refer to photograph).

13. Stitch a Yoyo flower between each scallop.

Lounge Pants

Two pairs of Lounge Pants were sewn up last night using the "Take It Easy Lounge Pants" pattern from Sewing Green.

I omitted the cuffs on the pant legs and added a drawstring to the waist band. They are super comfortable and will be just the ticket on our upcoming winter holiday.

After all the magazine projects I have been working on lately, it felt good to be making something for myself! Sarah loves her polka dot pants, and the Bliss flannel is extremely soft and thick.

Book Review: Make it Perfect

Sarah and I were contacted recently by the lovely folks at Penguin Australia, asking us if we would like to review sewing/craft books. Of course we jumped at the chance - we are big book lovers here!

Yesterday we arrived home to find a copy of Make it Perfect on our doorstep.Make it Perfect is written by Toni Coward, who also designs a range of modern sewing patterns for women and children under the Make it Perfect label. In her first book, Toni has put together a collection of 21 patterns for sewing women's and children's clothes.

What I like about the book is that the patterns are all modern and fresh. The garments are made up in some funky quilting cottons, and are attractively styled and photographed. Accompanying each design are clear step-by-step instructions with illustrations. Many of the designs would be suitable for beginner sewers, and they all look relatively quick and easy to make.

The children's patterns are suitable for children aged 6 months to 5 years, and the women's patterns are sized from extra small through to extra large. The book has a separate compartment for the 10 pattern sheets. All patterns are at 100% -  there is no need to enlarge them.

The hardest part is deciding which project to make first!  I know a little someone who would love the Cupcake Dress......

With summer coming, my work wardrobe could do with a Gelato Skirt!

Sarah will be studying textiles at school next year and has been inspired by the funky designs.  This book would make a great gift for a young Mum who loves to sew.

Make it Perfect will be released in Australia on 22/11/2010. It is Hardback, 144 pages, and is published by Penguin Australia.

Houses and More

It has been a fun week, as another magazine arrived today that has a couple of my projects in it.

After making all those Advent Houses, I still had Houses on my brain, when I made up this Terrace Houses Utility Apron. It has three handy pockets for storing things while you sew.

It also includes my Knitting Project Roll.

I am off to the sewing room now to make up some flannel PJ Pants for Sarah and I , even though it is currently 37 Deg C outside! Sarah's will be in red polka dot Bliss fabric (available from Pink Chalk Fabrics) and mine will be in Michael Miller Eiffel Tower fabric .  You never know when you might need warm PJ's.
