School Holiday Crafting

During the school holidays, I did a lot with my friends, including making these notebooks. We made a cover out of card, put some paper in the middle, and then sewed through it with the machine.

We also made some lip gloss in two flavours - vanilla and peppermint!

Recipe:
Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)
Flavour (e.g. Vanilla essence, peppermint oil)
Food Colouring
Corn Flour
Honey

Put a spoonful of vaseline in a bowl. Mix in a teaspoon of honey. Add flavour and colour (we used vanilla and peppermint essence). Mix some cornflour to thicken (approx 1/2 teaspoon). Mix until combined, and then spoon into a small container.

    Lest We Forget

Anzac Day is the day we honour our Armed Forces who served during World War I and II. I am proud to be the grand daughter of two men who served their country. My paternal grandfather was one of the original ANZACs who fought at Gallipoli in WWI, and in France and Belgium in WWII. My maternal Grandfather served in New Guinea in WWII (My Mum is the cute little girl in the photo above). Grandad recently turned 90, and despite his failing health is still going to attend ANZAC services today. We love you Grandad!!

I am very proud of my 14 year old son who was selected to attend the Smart Moves Invention Convention in Canberra this week. He was one of thirty high school students from around the country who received an all expenses paid trip to Canberra where he learnt skills to commercialise his invention . He has an innovation patent on his design for Party Mate - a device that clips a beverage (wine, beer can, glass) onto a plate to provide "an extra hand" at parties.  I can't show you a picture of his design just yet but this is him hard at work building the prototype! He was a finalist in the WA Inventor of the Year Schools Competition in 2008 for his design .

Receiving Award from Steve Wozniak (Co-founder of Apple Computers) and Professor Lyn Beasley (Chief Scientist of WA)

As no post would be complete without a crafty update, I will leave you with a peak at a quilt I have been working on this week!

Here is some lovely Andalucia fabric that will be put to good use soon.

    Mad Hatters Tea Party!

We received a wonderful package in the mail yesterday from the lovely Soo of My Little Space! We were lucky enough to win a giveaway on Soo's blog and she spoilt us with some lovely Wonderland fat quarters; garden themed stitchery patterns; and a Cotton and Paint magazine which is filled with inspiring projects and images. Thanks again Soo for our goodies - they were very much appreciated and will be put to good use :)

Our school holidays are now into their second week and we are keeping busy. Sarah made some delicious honey cookies today!

    Honey Cookies

    Serves: 20-30

Preparation time: 15 minutes or less

    Ingredients
    175 g unsalted butter, chopped
    1 cup caster sugar
    ¼ cup honey
    ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 egg , lightly beaten
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2¼ cups self-raising flour
Method: Stir butter, sugar, honey and cinnamon in a medium saucepan over low heat until butter has melted and mixture is smooth.
Remove from heat and transfer mixture to a large bowl. Cool to room temperature.
Stir in egg, vanilla and flour. Roll tablespoons of mixture into balls. Place 4 cm apart on two oven trays lined with baking paper and gently flatten with a fork.
Cook in 2 batches at 180°C for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool on trays.

We have also been doing a spot of shopping - mainly winter clothing for the kids. We fell in love with these sweet little paperclips at Kikki K which has just opened near us.

We also bought some other little goodies for a friend which we had fun wrapping up.

Thanks to Rachel at One Pretty Thing for featuring our Recipe Folder on her inspiring site!

    Quick Project: Recipe Folder

Photo Credit: Silver Magazine May 2009

Do you have a pile of recipes that you have cut out of magazines or printed from the internet? I know I did, and I was forever searching through them trying to locate a particular recipe. I have recently put together a recipe folder using some patterned papers and some simple scrapbooking techniques. My recipes were sorted in next to no time!! This would make a great Mothers Day project filled with favourite family recipes!

    Materials:

    • A4 2 ring binder with front insert pocket
    • pack of 5 A4 dividers with clear plastic tabs
    • 7 sheets of A4 patterned paper
    • coloured card
    • ribbon
    • double sided tape

Using a computer, design and print out labels for the divider tabs, and a title for the folder. Using double sided tape, attach a piece of patterned paper to each of the dividers. Assemble a cover page for the binder using a mix of patterned and solid coloured paper, and ribbon. Position the title on the cover page and slip into the insert pocket. Slip your favourite recipes into plastic sleeves and your project is complete.

    Knit One, Purl One....

The past week has been about family and food, so not a lot of sewing has been going on. I have been enjoying the slightly cooler weather which has been conducive to knitting. It is a more sociable craft (provided I don't need to count too many stitches).

Our sewing room has now been transformed back into a guest room (I won't show you a picture of what my dining room looks like now- but a girl has to be able to sew!)

    Check out these wonderful projects...

    Last Minute Easter Inspiration

I had a lot of fun putting together an Easter themed craft section for the latest issue of Silver Magazine. If you are running short of time, here are a couple of projects that can be whipped up in next to no time!

Sarah and I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy Easter!! We have family arriving from interstate in a couple of days so things may be a bit quiet around here.

    Easter is on it's Way!

As Easter is on its way, I decided to make some Easter Printables. I have made various Easter tags, as well as a header to put on a cellophane bag filled with Easter cookies. You can print them from here.

I have made the tags in two sizes - one inch and two inch - and they can be easily cut with a punch. The header is sized to fit a 5 inch wide cellophane bag. I got mine from Riot Art and Craft.

I have also made this caddy with an old tool box that I made at school a couple of years ago. I used card and 1 sheet of scrapbooking paper to repurpose it.

This week, Bronwyn  from Whippet Good has sent us some cute cupcake fabric. Thanks heaps, I'm sure it will be well used!
